Job Market Perspective
The State of California continues to enjoy a positive economic climate and data trends, pointing to another year of strong economic growth. According to The Conference Board, the Sunshine State’s consumer confidence rose in January to its highest level since May 2007, which was 10 percent higher than the index average for all of 2016. Another report published by Gallup also ranked California’s consumer confidence the second-highest in the nation. Unemployment rates remained low at the end of 2016, including 5 percent in California and 4.7 percent in Los Angeles County. Orange County reached a nine-year low of 3.5 percent, which can be attributed to strong job creation in sectors such as retail, financial services, professional services, construction and trade.
Many factors are expected to bolster the US economy in 2017 including proposed tax and regulatory reforms, strong consumer spending, a stable housing market, government stimulus, and a strong appetite for continued corporate growth. Although consumer confidence outside of California moderated in January, most households remained upbeat about the job market, suggesting the national economy will continue to grow. All data points evaluated in this newsletter suggest improved, but guarded optimism, until the new administration announces specific proposals and initiatives aimed at maintaining a pace of forward economic momentum.
